I am absolutely thrilled and incredibly proud to share some historic news from our music department!
Our Middle School Band traveled to the prestigious Great East Music Festival and brought home the highest possible honor: a Platinum Medal Rating.
Mr. Ed Lowy and our student-musicians delivered a breathtaking performance, earning a near-perfect score of 98 out of 100!
To put their talent into perspective, one of the professional adjudicators on the panel stated that they were "the best middle school band he has ever heard."
For those unfamiliar with the event, the Great East Music Festival is a long-standing New England tradition that brings together top-tier scholastic ensembles. It serves as a rigorous educational showcase where groups are independently evaluated by professional judges on a strict points system, followed by an immediate on-stage clinic.
To earn a Platinum rating, an ensemble must achieve a score of 95 or higher. Securing a 98 is an elite, extraordinarily rare distinction.

South Meadow Middle School’s gymnasium was filled with music, energy, and celebration on Wednesday evening as students in grades 5 through 8 took the stage for the annual Spring Concert under the direction of Ed Lowy and Elizabeth Ring-Fortin, accompanied by Lisa Murray and flutist Emily Bennett.
The evening showcased the remarkable growth and talent of student musicians across band, chorus, select chorus, and jazz band ensembles. Audience members enjoyed an engaging and varied program that ranged from classical favorites like Overture 1812 to contemporary hits including Happy, September, and Drive My Car.
The concert also reflected the tremendous teamwork behind the scenes. Special thanks were extended to school administrators, custodial staff, sound and video support teams, and faculty volunteers who helped transform the gymnasium into a performance space for the evening.
Families, friends, and community members left the concert celebrating not only the students’ musical accomplishments, but also the dedication, creativity, and joy that continue to define the South Meadow music program.

Contra Dancing is far from a relic of the past; it remains a flourishing social staple throughout our region. With weekly community dances held in various towns across the area, it serves as a bridge between generations and a testament to our local spirit. By introducing this to our students, we are connecting them to a broader social network that exists right in their own backyard. During these sessions, students didn't just watch—they moved! Not only did they learn the steps, but also the social piece of cooperation, respect, and communication that makes this form of social dancing successful and fun.
